How do visual artists go Beyond the Book?

This question was answered quite remarkably by 13 Peninsula and Canterbury artists in a stunning array of creative connections with beautiful and unusual materials.

Beyond the Book took a forest walk with Judy Rogers whose book, painted and stitched canvas pages could be hung 5 different ways. Vicki Smith presented a book made of fish vellum cured on a sailing trip from Fiji to New Zealand. Pages of a book were crafted into an axe striking at the heart of another text. A book melted into a poetic three-dimensional description of oral and written narratives of myth and turangawaewae. An intellectually provoking piece was a precise and delicate flower made by bookbinder Yinghua Jiang from guillotine trimmings of coloured books posing the question: “What is Beyond?”
